The holiday season in the Bay area is one of the best times to visit. While there is always something happening in the city no matter what time of year, the holidays offer a few extra-special events and activities to enjoy! Get started now and add these items to your San Francisco holiday bucket list!
Spend an evening at the theater
San Francisco is home to several theaters offering world-class productions year-round. But during the holiday season, special theatrical traditions are brought back to life including an adaptation of A Christmas Carol at A.C.T. Geary Theater or the classic Nutcracker at the San Francisco Ballet. Also enjoy special showings of Hamilton at the Orpheum (through January 5, 2020) or Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at The Curran.
See the Christmas tree at Macy’s in Union Square
While there are plenty of Christmas trees to see around the city, the most iconic and probably the most festive is the one on display at Macy’s in Union Square. Break out your old ice skates and skate beneath the tree for a picture-perfect holiday celebration. This year, in 2019, marks the 30th year of the display. Celebrate with the annual lighting of the tree the day after Thanksgiving where San Francisco’s most recognizable tree will be lit around 6:50 p.m.
Ring in the New Year in San Francisco
End the year and start the new year in 2020 off with a bang in San Francisco New Year’s Eve. Enjoy a firework display over the bay, while local bars and restaurants will be hosting a variety of special dinners and events to say good-bye to 2019 and hello to 2020.
See the lights
From Thanksgiving Day through New Year’s, the streets of San Francisco come alive with colorful light displays for the Illuminate SF Festival of Light. The display includes more than 30 beautiful, eco-friendly light art installations throughout the city. San Francisco neighborhoods will also light up their streets, homes, and shopping districts for the holiday season.
Visit Tom and Jerry’s House
One of the more impressive holiday displays of the season can always be seen at Tom and Jerry’s House in Noe Valley. The unbelievably huge and wonderfully tacky Christmas display is found at 21st and Church Street in Dolores Heights. The display includes an astronomical amount of lights, two large stockings with their names Tom and Jerry, garland, stuffed animals, and of course a giant Christmas tree. The 60-foot Christmas tree that sits in front of the yard is real. It was planted in 1973 and hasn’t stopped growing since.
This special stop should be added to anyone’s San Francisco holiday bucket list and it is easy to do when you stay at Noe’s Nest. We are located less than a mile from Tom and Jerry’s house on Guerrero Street between 24th and 25th Streets.
